Student

One reason why studying in Canada may be an attractive option for the foreign student is the possibility of future permanent residence. To attract and retain Canadian-educated foreign students, the government created the Canadian experience class in 2008. A student is a person who is authorized by a study permit or related regulations to engage in studies in Canada and who is studying or intends to study in Canada.

A study permit is a written authorization issued to foreign students authorizing them to engage in studies in Canada. Visa officers look at many factors before deciding whether an applicant qualifies for a study permit. To successfully apply for a study permit, applicants should:

  • present a letter of acceptance from the educational institution where they intend to study (Before you can apply for a study permit, you must have been accepted at a designated learning institution in Canada.);
  • be able to pay the tuition fees for the course or program that they intend to pursue;
  • be able to financially support themselves and any family members who are with them during their period of study;
  • be able to cover the transportation cost for themselves and any family members to and from Canada;
  • pass the CIC medical examination, if required; and
  • receive a Certificat d’acceptation du Quebec if they intend to study in Quebec.
